Algeria: "The presidential campaign of 2014 will be long and dirty"

Jeudi 28 Février 2013

With 13 months of the 2014 Algerian presidential to go, anything seems possible. Opponents of a fourth term of the current Head of State are ahead, according to Algerian media. A Comment from an influential personality who knows the corridors of power and issues of the moment, is clear: "The presidential campaign of 2014 will be long and dirty. '
Algeria:
It  has to be said that the signs are clear: an unprecedented crisis  with the FLN, where nobody, including Algerian President is able to impose his candidate for the post of Secretary General and the  unpacking of corruption dating back several years, concerning  power struggles around Sonatrach ..

For a few weeks, the situation in the  FLN has  became the main barometer of the changing balance of power at the top of the state, between the various clans of power. From the beginning, January 31,  with  Abdelaziz Belkhadem,  the  party faced a deadlock.

In addition, the corruption that marred the three terms of Bouteflika, has considerably weakened him. He has almost no one to lean on. Yazid Zerhouni, who managed the administration with an iron hand, was ousted and replaced by  Dahou Ould Kablia who is a caricature, according to media reports.

Chakib Khelil, who controlled the circuits of money and contracts via Sonatrach, has left the government through the back door. He is at the heart of a corruption scandal which is unprecedented in the country's history.

In addition, the Algerian president is surrounded by evil:  The Sellal Government  has no specific program. Social protest  has resumed. The program for the realisation of hundreds of thousands of housing faces many obstacles. Sites that would start in January for deliveries beginning in 2014 have not yet reached the stage of contract signatures.

Thus,  President Bouteflika 's scope for action  seems very narrow. Even the revision of the Constitution has yet  to see the light of day. Boualem Bessaih said, the project is still under development. Meanwhile, the President multiplies the gestures of appeasement towards the military and is still investigating the Algerian press.
