Algeria:Abdelmalek Sellal named as Prime Minister replaces Ahmed Ouyahia

President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, terminated the functions of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia on Monday and named Abdelmalek Sellal as Prime Minister, a statement of the Presidency of the Republic said.

"Pursuant to Article 77.5 of the Constitution, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of the Republic, ended on that day the functions of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, who presented the resignation of the government," the statement said.
 
"The President of the Republic appointed Abdelmalek Sellal as Prime Minister," the statement from the Presidency of the Republic concluded.
 
The new Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal does not belong to any party and  has held several senior positions including several ministerial portfolios.
 
Born on  1 August 1948 in Constantine (432 km east of Algiers), Sellal before his appointment as Prime Minister, served as Minister of Water Resources and interim minister of Transportation.
 
 A graduate from the National School of Administration (ENA), he served successively as Minister of the Interior, Youth and Sports, Public Works and Transportation.
 
 He was also ambassador to Algeria in Hungary, Sellal was wali (prefect) of Boumerdes, Adrar, Sidi Bel-Abbes, Oran and Laghouat.
 
Within the public service, the new prime minister had been a director Technical Adviser, Chief of Staff at Guelma prefecture, technical advisor to the Ministry of Education, Chief Daïra in Tamanrasset, Arzew, unassigned walis to Interior Minister and Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
 
 He was also the director of  Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s  campaign for the presidential elections of 2004 and 2009.
