Al Qaeda is trying to establish new base in Libya

Al-Qaeda is inncreasing its efforts to set up a new base for its terrorist operations in Libya following the recent attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, according to the latest Western intelligence reports,writes The Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper quotes intellegence sources saying that AQIM is trying to link up with Ansar Al Sharia which is accused of the attack on the US Benghazi consulate.It is also looking to forge links with a number of Islamist militias such as the the Abu Salim Martyr's Brigade.

AQIM is also said to be seeking  Russian-made SA-24 and SA-7 ground to air missiles to shoot down civilian aircraft and attack shipping in the Mediterranean.If AQIM can successfully combine with armed islamist groups and militia,it may be able to develop areas in Libya under its control as it has done in Mali, The Daily Telegraph writes.

Leaders of the AQIM movement have been travelling regularly to the desert town of Ghat in south-western Libya, close to the border with Niger according to intellegence officials..The Al Qaeda affiliate Al Shebab is also said to be  regrouping and rearming  in Somalia  following its expulsion from the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
