Ahmed Shafik cleared to run in presidential standoff and Lower House of parliament dissolved.
The Supreme Army Council SCAF confirmed that the presidential run off would take place as planned on 16 and 17 June. Mohamed Mursi the Muslim Brotherhood has said he respects the Supreme Court decision but many are against the decision.

The Muslim Brotherhood and the  Salafist Al Nour party won the majority in the parliament. Abdul Moneim Abol Fotouh one of the presidential candidates in the first round called it a "complete coup" and  the Al Nour party said the decision showed "a complete disregard for the free will of voters".

It means that Egypt may have a president with undefined powers as there is no constitution and no Lower House of Parliament util new elections. The prospect that serious conflict could ensue from the Islamist parties puts Egypt on the edge of a precipice again with a very polarised presidential run off between a secularist and an islamist candidate.

For the poor Egyptian voters who lined  up so patiently and so often to vote in interminable ballots it is especially disheartening and it is little consolation that the matter is being dealt with legally. The thought of having to go through parliamentary elections again will be too much for some. Inevitably many will suspect that the Army is trying to hang on to power and to block the revolution. They can only hope that a compromise can be found, not least so that stability can be restored and Egypt's economic decline can be reversed.
