Action plan for local farming produce added value

A sub regional workshop on the development of labelled local farming produce was accompanied by an action plan to boost regional capacities in this field in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

The action program revolves around the improvement of regulatory frameworks and opitimisation of sectororal organisation and market development.

The worshop held in Tunis from 4-5 July by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)  with the Italian Bari based Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, experts from Morocco , Algeria and Tunisia stressed the importance of lanelling  local farming produce in the Maghreb. They presented the results of national studies on their countries' policies and their experiences the FAO said in a communique on Thursday.

The experts agreed that the labelling process offers several advantages including in particular the improvement of the income of local communities , job creation for young people and women and encouraging biodiversity.

Local products are often grown in difficult areas such as mountains,forests and oases the FAO said." These products represent a valourised ancestral know how and cultural peculiarities  of each country", it said.

Representatives of agricultural ministries, research centres,civil society,technology parks and agripoles from Algeria,Morocco and Tunisia took part in this workshop entitled  " Improving people's living conditions through better valorisation of local farming products".
