Ghardaia has been shaken since last December by sectarian clashes between the Chaamba community of Arab origin and Mozabite Berbers of the Muslim Ibadi sect, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Violence was reported in recent years in various localities of Ghardaia province, which is located not far from oil and gas rich regions in the Algerian desert.

Clashes have so far claimed more than 13 lives while hundreds were wounded and many homeless after their stores, farms or homes were set on fire.

Two people were killed and three others injured during clashes last weekend.
