300 Moroccan Royal Armed Forces commandos to be sent north Mali

Morocco has been asked to participate in the preparations for the African military operation to dislodge the violent Islamist groups occupying the northern Mali.

Western countries have submitted an application to Morocco, soliciting participation by specialised units of the Royal Armed Forces(FAR) in military operations which are in preparation to form an African ECOWAS led force in northern Mali.

They would, according to information relayed by the Arabic newspaper Assabah,consist of 300 commandos of the FAR specialised in desert combat operations to be sent to northern Mali, for missions involving protection and also reconnaisance and guarding the african auxiliary forces to be deployed on site.

The same sources indicated that the FAR were preferred for their experience of fighting in the Sahara, and their expertise in securing desert zones, reconnaisance and extended operations, as is the case in the Sahara.
