Zine El Abidine Ben Ali sentenced to 20 ears in prison.

Former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was sentenced yesterday in absentia to 20 years in prison for inciting disorder, murder and looting in Tunisian territory during the revolution, which led to his ouster in January 2011.

The former Interior Minister, Rafik Belhaj Kacem was sentenced to 12 years and seven security chiefs to prison terms of  up to 15 years.

Tthe military court delivered its verdict in the case known as Ouardanine, on the death of four young people shot and killed during the violence that rocked the city of Ouardanine in the Tunisian Sahel, in  January 2011. 

Tthe victims' families accused law enforcement  agents of giving the order to fire on demonstrators.

Of the 23 senior officials on trial over the killing of protesters in the towns of Kasserine, Tala, Kairouan and Tajrouine, 14 were acquitted including Ben Ali's presidential security chief Ali Seriati and Ahmed Friaa, who was appointed interior minister shortly before the president fled, according to Reuters.

Ben Ali has already been sentenced to 60 years in prison but is unlikely to be extradited from Saudi Arabia whch
gave him shelter after he fled the revolution.
