"Women MPs should play their part as representatives of the nation and defend women causes", said participants at the session titled "impact of women MPs in Islam countries".

Co-chaired by Moroccan minister of solidarity, women, family and social development, Bassima Hakkaoui, and founder of the world forum of women in parliament, Silvana Koch-Mehrin (Germany), the meeting noted a relative increase of women in parliaments, with the most important progress taking place in the Arab world (15.9pc of women Mps, compared to 4 pc in 1995).

The encounter was also an opportunity to exchange experiences among several African and Asian countries on consolidation of women presence in parliaments and women's economic empowerment.
