Why the Benghazi Investigation Is Going Nowhere - Time

Vivienne Walt writes in Time that while the political furore in Washington over perceived failures of US security which led to the deaths of the ambassador and three diplomatic staff stil goes on and may impede President Obama's appointment of John Brennan to head the CIA,in Libya the investigation into the attack is gong nowhere.
Why the Benghazi Investigation Is Going Nowhere - Time
Libyans say that the investigation is non operational and that witnesses are to frightened to talk and police officers linked to the case have been targetted for assassination. Captain Abdelsalam al-Mahdawi, Benghazi's chief of  criminal investigation was abducted and has not been seen since. His kidnapping came less than two months after Benghazi’s police chief, Faraj el-Drissi, was murdered in his Benghazi home and just weeks after armed men attempted to break into a jail in order to free the suspects in custody for el-Drissi’s murder.Anyone who deals with the attack on the US mission inBenghazi disapears or is killed.

There is a growing sense that those involved in the attack on the American diplomatic mission might never face justice. The Tunisian Ali  al-Harzi, the only individual to have faced questioning by the FBI has been released in Tunisia. he denied any connecton with the attack. The article suggests that those responsible may be dead or missing. The stalled investigation is a far cry from the promise of justice and retribution  by President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Libyans now doubt that the investigation will proceed further and some suuggested to Time that the attack may have been conducted by a militia too strong for the central governement to deal with. Some also say the governement refused to take action during the attack.

The Republicans in Washington however are still calling for explanations from the Obama administration and the security services. Hilary Clinton is due to testify to a  Congressional committee on 22 January after a delay due to illness.

Libyans are begining to forget the attack and move on,the article says, however their sleep continues to be disturbed by the sound of US drones overhead still flying security and surveillance missions over Benghazi.
