Everything depends, if you believe knowledgeable sources on the visit of the all-powerful Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Algiers. While the United States fought Hurricane Sandy, Bouteflika gave his blessing to the military intervention of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) in the north Mali, says the Algerian daily Le Matin
Why does Bouteflika want to save the head of Iyad Ag Ghaly?
The talks with Secretary of  State Hilary Clinton focused on how Algeria could participate in principle with the intervention effort. President Bouteflika has long held the view that a military solution alone will not solve the situation in northern Mali and the Americans appear to be listening, more than France, Le Matin says.

But Algeria does not agree with the United States and France on one point. Algeria regards Anasr Dine as different from Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and its affiliate Mujao. The U.S and France lump them altogether as terrorists.

Bouteflika wants to save Iyad Ag Ghaly and his Ansar Dine group perhaps because he believes they are key to the regional solution for the Tuareg. The exact reason for his point of view is not entirely clear, Le Matin says, as decisions are made by the international community on military intervention in northern Mali which appears inevitable.

Malian Islamist group Ansar Dine has said it is prepared to distance itself from Al-Qaeda's North Africa branch,
the  Algerian newspaper El-Watan said on Saturday, a day after sending a delegation to Algiers for peace talks.

Ansar Dine's leader Iyad Ag Ghaly "would be ready to officially distance himself from AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) and play the 'democracy' game," El-Watan reported, citing an Algerian official
