Upper House Speaker Commends Solidarity Displayed by Moroccans to Fight Against Coronavirus Spread

Rabat - Speaker of the House of Advisors (upper house), Hakim Benchamach, welcomed Friday at the opening of the parliamentary spring session the values of sacrifice and solidarity shown by the Moroccan people at these times in which the country is fighting against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd session of the 2019-2020 legislative year, Benchamach underlined that this event is an opportunity to express the pride of the upper house with regard to the values of sacrifice, national solidarity and collective mobilization that have been demonstrated by the various components of the Moroccan society.

He also recalled the strong involvement of all the members of this legislative institution in contributing into the Special Fund for the Management of the Coronavirus Pandemic, set up upon the high instructions of HM King Mohammed VI.

The official also commended the royal pardon granted to 5,654 inmates during this exceptional period, as well as the mobilization of military medicine to curb the spread of the virus.

Benchamach also praised the spirit of responsibility and patriotism of the parliamentary committees during the period between the two sessions, through the positive interaction with the government's efforts to fight the current health crisis, as well as the implementation of the precautionary measures during their meetings, calling on all members of the upper house to be vigilant while performing their functions.

Regarding the control of government activity, he said that the members of the House are working to further strengthen their role in this area, particularly through written and oral questions.
