Unemployment Rate Decreased in 2017-2019, Minister

Rabat - Minister of Labor and Professional Integration Mohamed Amkraz said, on Thursday in Rabat, that the unemployment rate at the national level fell by 1% in 2017-2019. Giving a presentation to the Government Council on the labor market indicators between 2017 and 2019, Amkraz noted that the unemployment rate at the national level stood at 9.2% in 2019 against 10.2% in 2017, saying that this rate decreased slightly among young people aged 15 to 24 and women, as well as among graduates.

Quoted by El Hassan Abyaba, government spokesperson, in a statement read out during a press briefing at the end of the meeting, the minister explained that during this same period, the number of unemployed people dropped from 1,216,000 to 1,107,000 and the number of jobs has increased to 362,000, that is 120,600 jobs created on average annually. The service sector takes the lion's share of job creation by 435,000 jobs created over the past three years, he said, adding that, in general, job creation concerns paid employment while the loss of employment concerns unpaid employment. The underemployment rate among young workers aged over 15 has declined in recent years, he said, noting that it has posted 9.2% in 2019 while in 2017 it was 9.8%. Regarding unpaid employment, it has experienced a decline in recent years, standing at 15.3% in 2019 while in 2016 it was 16.6%, noted the Minister, adding that according to data from the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), the year 2018 saw a net increase of 173,700 employees, while the year 2017 posted an increase of 167,100 employees, that is 341,600 employees between 2017 and 2018.
