US Recognition of Moroccanness of Sahara, Consecration of Pragmatic Diplomacy - Ambassador

Belgrade - The historic decision of the United States to recognize Morocco's full sovereignty over its Sahara is the consecration of pragmatic Moroccan diplomacy, said Morocco's ambassador to Serbia, Mohamed Amine Belhaj.
In an interview with Serbian newspaper "Politika", the diplomat stated that the recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its entire Sahara, through the presidential decree signed by President Donald Trump, is a historic decision, a major development and a turning point in the process of resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara.

This recognition with immediate effect is a strong legal, political and diplomatic step, and the result of more than two years and half of continuous consultations between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and US President Donald Trump, he said.

Belhaj added that the United States has affirmed its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious, credible and realistic basis for a just and lasting solution to this regional dispute, noting that this support is a consistent US position given the fact that previous US Administrations (Democrat and Republican) had consistently expressed support for the plan since its submission to the United Nations in April 2007.

Relations between the two countries are rooted in history, the diplomat said. Morocco will continue to work with the new US administration in the same spirit of its strategic partnership with the United States, as its oldest and closest ally, he added.

As the first materialization of this important decision, the United States of America decided to open a consulate in Dakhla, with an essentially economic vocation, to encourage American investments and the contribution to economic and social development, in particular for the benefit of the inhabitants of the southern provinces, he recalled.

According to Belhaj, the opening of more than 18 African, Arab and American consulates in the cities of Dakhla and Laayoune is a clear reaffirmation of the Moroccan Sahara, and a momentum that will continue in full compliance with international law.

The diplomat reiterated the Kingdom's full commitment to the political process conducted under the auspices of the United Nations, within the framework of the autonomy initiative as the only solution to the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, within the framework of Morocco's sovereignty and respect for its territorial integrity.
