US Presidential Decree, Turning Point for Moroccan Sahara Issue - Ambassador
Canberra - The historic US decision to recognize Morocco's full sovereignty over its Sahara is a turning point for the Moroccan Sahara issue, said Morocco's ambassador to Australia, Karim Medrek.

In a tribune published by Australian daily "Sydney Sun", the ambassador highlighted the ins and outs of the US proclamation recognizing the full sovereignty of Morocco over its Saharan provinces.
The proclamation of Morocco's full Sovereignty over its Sahara by the United States comes to reiterate "the current trend on the international level as well as to confirm Morocco's credibility and leadership on the regional and continental level due to the far-sighted vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has made of the Kingdom, since His accession into the throne, a haven of stability and peace," the diplomat wrote.
Recalling the relations of friendship and cooperation uniting the Kingdom and the United States of America, Medrek highlighted the impact of the US decision on strengthening the international position of Morocco on its domestic issue.
The US position "intervenes in a context marked by many developments all over the recent months, notably in light of the continuous support to the Moroccan Sahara, illustrated through the opening of around 20 Consulates General in the southern cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, in addition to the massive number of countries withdrawing their recognition of the self-proclaimed entity," the diplomat explained.
"The US recognition comes, in addition, at a decisive moment to support Morocco's action, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, to secure the borders between the Kingdom and Mauritania, notably El Guerguarate which has witnessed a blockade of commercial and human movement, in addition to banditry acts committed flagrantly by the polisario separatist armed front," Medrek went on.
According to the diplomat, the American position will mark undoubtedly a turning point in the history of this artificial conflict over the Sahara, created during the cold war era around a discourse that seems obsolete, as the enemies of Morocco's territorial integrity are more than ever isolated on the international panorama.
"The latest UN Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2548 adopted on October 30, call for "a political, realistic, pragmatic and lasting solution" to the Sahara issue "which is based on compromise" and repeatedly reaffirmed the seriousness and credibility of the autonomy initiative to settle the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara," he concluded.
