UNICEF: Are children are really protected in Marrakech?
To this end, the UN organization for children has launched a call for consultation. "This initiative is a first step for stakeholders, including local decision-makers, to better understand, identify, analyse and address local priorities for child protection, the Moroccan daily Le Soir reports.

It will also provide information on the relationship (or lack of relationship) between the "formal" system (eg, laws, policies, services, finance and human resources) and the " informal " elements such as family practices and standards," said UNICEF Morocco. In other words, the study will help to establish a mapping of the existing protection system and define the "failures" and improvements  .

Several paedophilia cases have occured in the city

"The child protection concerns the prevention and fight against  the violence, exploitation and abuse of children, including sexual exploitation for commercial purposes, child labour and harmful traditional practices, such as female genital mutilation and child marriage ", explained UNICEF. A question arises: why the choice of the city of Marrakech and not another city? "Marrakech recorded a very high rate of female victims of violence, according to figures from HCP. A situation that certainly impacted the children, "says UNICEF Morocco.

Marrakech is also singled out by the associations for "the sexual exploitation of children." Several cases of paedophilia erupted in this tourist city. The study be conducted by UNICEF  is within the framework of the project "Safe Cities and friends and all in all", initiated by UN-Habitat, UNICEF, UN-Women and the Urban Commune of Marrakesh . This project aims to support "local officials to develop processes with women, youth and children, as well as other stakeholders in the city of Marrakech to identify and implement the necessary actions to increase safety, reduce violence and improve the quality of life of women, youth and children. "
