Tunisia takes part in the World Tourism Fair FITUR 2012 18 to 21 January in Madrid

Tunisia has set itself three objectives at FITUR : the revival of the Tunisian tourism markets issuers, the reconquest of the Spanish market which has seen one of the largest declines in flows on Tunisia (-78%) and restoring the confidence of foreign tourists.

Tunisia is taking part in the World Tourism FAIR at FITUR 2012 . The aim is to win back tourists fro European countries especially Spain which is the second most important market after France and jhas seen a 78 per cent drop in tourist arrivals. and to restore confidence in tunisia as a tourism destination. Recent demonstrations and strikes have not helped to stabalise the market and France has declared the South of Tunisia off limits for its nationals because of terrorism fears.

 Tunisian Tourism Minister Elyes Fakhfakh who is leading the delegation at FITUR has seen his Spanish counterpart and is interested in pursuing cooperation in training and quality control. He is due to travel to France in February. Sixty Spanish companies  currently operate in Tunisia including tourism companies.

Tunisia's tourism arrivals dropt during the revolution and incidents on the Tunisian border combined with riots and strikes have played their part in the down turn. Recent tourism pronouncements have concentrated on developing cultural tourism and attractions such as the mosaics in the Bardo Museum, Carthage the extensive roman remains at three abandoned cities – Thuburbo Majus, Sbeitla and Dougga, Matma, El Bul and locations such as Djerba and El Jem and Gabes. 

Tunisia's tourist arrivals in 2010 were 6.90 million and arrivals dropt 34.4 per cent from 2010 to 2011 according to  with the loss of 34,000 jobs according to TAP.
