Tunisia has to give "positive signals" to foreign investors, says IMF

A senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official called for Tunisia to send "positive signals" to the international community and foreign investors on Monday.

"It is important that Tunisia is working to give positive signals to the international community and foreign investors through the realisation of a process of comprehensive reform that ensures recovery of the Tunisian economy," said Director of the Department of Middle East and Asia in the IMF, Masood Ahmed, following his meeting with Secretary of State for Finance, Selim Besbes.
 
The IMF  is currently monitoring, the means to develop cooperation with Tunisia and to establish mechanisms for coordination of joint cooperation programs, Masood Ahmed said.
 
"Tunisia is able to successfully transition period while maintaining economic stability despite the economic and financial changes at the international level", he said.
 
 
Following a meeting with the head of the provisional government, Hamadi Jebali, the IMF official said that "Tunisia, which crosses a historical period, has avoided a macroeconomic destabilisation, despite the negative impacts and shocks exogenous to the political transition. "
 
"The main objective of Tunisia is now able to achieve a higher growth rate and ensure equitable distribution of that growth."
 
The interview with the head of government was, he said, to review ways to implement and further strengthen cooperation between the IMF and Tunisia and  help Tunisian  financial institutions and departments responsible for finance (Central Bank of Tunisia Ministry of Finance and ...) in materials analysis and technical assistance and also financial support.
 
 
Ridha Saidi, Minister to the head of government responsible for economic issues, returned to the report, published July 25, by the Board of Directors of the IMF, which provides, this year, a growth rate of 2.7% in Tunisia against an earlier estimate of 2.2%.
 
He referred to a consistency of views between the government and the IMF which  recommended in its report,  public expenditure control and reforming the system of grants and pensions.
 
For his part, during his meeting with the IMF official, Secretary of State for Finance, Selim Besbes, expressed the willingness of Tunisia to begin cyclical reforms that are needed and prepare a platform form favouring a later phase of structural reforms.
 
He cited, in this regard, efforts to restructure the public banking system and reform of the legal framework for micro-loans and Islamic finance.
