According to the latest figures supplied by the Department of the fight against illiteracy (DLCA) in the Ministry of National Education (MEN), Morocco has more than 30% illiteracy, some 9.6 million of 32 million Moroccans.

According to the same figures reported by La Vie Eco, the rural world is most affected by illiteracy with a rate of 55%. The rate remains high despite all the efforts the European Union (EU) has contributed to the literacy program, which runs from 2008 to 2013 a whopping 27 million euros (300 million dirhams) which corresponds to 25% of the budget allocated to DLCA, said the same source.

These figures are reported in detail indicating that the age groups most affected by illiteracy are 45 years and older: 46% of this category was illiterate in 2011 (4.5 million), while those between 15 and 24 years are increasingly less illiterate: the current rate is 20%.

However, the figures are contested by several NGOs that evoke other figures reflecting slightly higher illiteracy. But in the absence of other figures, rates advanced by the DLCA remain more formal.
