The calligraphy of the artist Smail Metmati and the Amazigh Tifinagh alphabet.
The Algerian artist Smail Metmati has successfully used the Amazigh alphabet, Tifinagh in his art as calligraphy. He exhibits from Wednesday at the Moufdi-Zakaria Palace of Culture, with a hundred of his paintings, which are all distinguished by the warm colors typical of the Great South of Algeria.

The works of the artist, a native of Bejaia, have transformed the Baya gallery of the palace into a museum recalling the paintings and engravings of archaeological sites specific to the Saharan regions.
A graduate of the College of Fine Arts of Algiers, Smail, a specialist in Arabic calligraphy and other styles of painting, including miniatures and decorative wood, has managed to use Tifinagh letters, recognizable by their geometric shapes, an original calligraphy even though the technique has not been modified.
Several compositions symbolizing Berber characters with ocher and derivatives, isolated or compound sentences, with a yellow background and giving the impression of movement, can be seen by visitors of the exhibition which runs until March 24.
All the works are created meticulously by the artist, they differ only in the form as they give, aligned, a sense of repetition of the same painting.
Inspired by the writings of the famous Algerian Amazigh poets, headed by the troubadour Si M'hand U M'hand, the artist expresses his love of calligraphy and country, the peace, nostalgia and other issues raised by these poets, both ancient or contemporary.
Proclaiming his "love of heritage," Smail Metmati designed his works after a research work since the 1980s because, for him, "Tifinagh is writing like any other," he said at the APS at the opening of the exhibition.
This artist uses "El qalam" (a traditional feather cut in the reed) to keep its authenticity in the art of calligraphy,without preventing him from using other materials such as oil paint, the acrylic, earth, clay and plaster for the sake of innovation, and to give a contemporary touch to the work.
