The Killing of Leila Alaoui, a Blow to Humanist Values (UNESCO Chief)

he killing of Moroccan photographer Leila Alaoui "is a blow to all of us who uphold the humanist values UNESCO was established to promote," said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.


"I condemn the terrorist attack in Ouagadougou and present my heartfelt condolences to the families and relations of the victims of this violent extremism," she added in a statement.

"Ms Alaoui's work reflected a unique sensitivity and appreciation of our common humanity, transcending the barriers of culture, geography and gender, in favor of human rights and freedom of expression, respect and mutual understanding," she recalled.

Focusing on the themes of cultural diversity, migration, human rights and the construction of identity, Alaoui's work has been published in numerous newspapers and magazine and exhibited in the Arab region, Europe and the Americas.

The funeral service of Leila Alaoui took place on Wednesday in Marrakech.

The Moroccan photographer died on Monday night in a clinic in Ouagadougou after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Born in 1982, Leila Alaoui was in Ouagadougou to take photos on behalf of Amnesty International.

The attack against the hotel and the coffee shop downtown the capital of Burkina Faso claimed the lives of 30 people.
