The 5th Chinese Arab Forum 29-31 May. Tunisia
The work of this session will be presided over by Arab League Secretay General Nabil Arabi and China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. More than 400 personalities representing China and the majority of Arab countries will be crowned by the signing of several agreements to  enhance economic cooperation between Arab countries and China, particularly in the areas of investment, energy and tourism, TAP reports.

Trade between Arab countries and China increased from $ 38 billion in 2004, year of creation of the forum, to $ 200 billion in 2011. Politically, the Arab countries are working to develop a common understanding with China on various regional and international issues.

In an article in Gulf News in January ,Deena Kamel Yousef highlighted some of the challenges facing chinese investment in the Middle East these included dumping of chinese products in the region and treating the Middle East as an export market not an investment opportunity.

In 2010, China's foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Arab world amounted to $783 million (Dh2.875 billion), just one per cent of China's FDI compared to 64 per cent in Asia and 15 per cent in Latin America. There is a need for the Chinese to add value by technology transfer to industrial projects in the Middle East the article argued, also recommending greater incentives to attract Chinese investment and to diversify from hydrocarbons based economies.

In the first 11 months of 2011, trade between China and the UAE grew to $32 billion, a rise of 38.2 per cent over the same period in 2010, according to Chinese customs data. Chinese exports to the UAE, worth $24.3 billion, dominated that trade, the article in Gulf News concluded.

The China People's Daily observed that Energy cooperation is a vital element in Sino Arab business development.According to Chinese media reports, China now imports more than 55 percent of its crude oil needs, and 47 percent of that comes from the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is China's top oil supplier, while Qatar is its largest supplier of liquefied natural gas.

However there have also been significant developments in other areascChinese enterprises have increased their investments and technology transfer in infrastructure construction, mechanical manufacturing, and light and textile industries in the Arab world. By the end of 2010, China's accumulated investment in the Arab states had crossed $15 billion, while Arab enterprises' investment in China added up to $2.6 billion, making it one of the fastest growing sources of foreign investment in China.

within the framework of the China-Arab Cooperation  Forum, the two sides have established more than a dozen cooperative mechanisms covering areas such as culture, finance, environmental protection, agriculture and infrastructure.

China has an islamic population of 20 million  which forms and important bridge for trade between China and the Arab World, the article concludes.

China is now the greatest independent industrial nation on earth and it can approach the Arab World without being involved in any conflict in the world and supporting the  just rights of the Palestinian people. This enables China to have an objective independant view point in its approach to the Arab World.

It can also bring understanding of events like the Arab Spring because its society has evoved through great and sometimes painful changes such as Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward. The economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping were a triumph of adapting Chinese society to new business dynamics while still retaining the main characteristics of "Socialism with Chinese characteristics" in the People's Republic of China. There was also the very difficult moment of the protests in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989. China has much wisdom it can impart to the Arab World and North Africa, as well as solid investment prospects in difficult global economic conditions.

The 6th China Arab Forum will be held in China in 2014.
