The new project consists of the hydro-agricultural development of 1,330 ha, planting olive trees over an area of ??665 ha, dedicating 665 hectacres to vegetable crops, and providing guidance and technical support to farmers.

The 293 million dirham project, which is due for completion within 48 months, will benefit more than 520 farmers and ensure an annual production of 5,300 tonnes of olives and 31,500 tonnes of vegetables, improve farmers' incomes and create 430 jobs.

This major project is also part of the implementation of the national programme for water-saving irrigation in the irrigated area of Melouya by converting traditional gravity irrigation systems into drop-by-drop irrigation on an area of ??37,000 hectares.

The 2 billion dirham programme is expected to save, by 2020, nearly 62 million cubic metres of irrigation water, and will contribute to a qualitative and quantitative improvement of agricultural production in the region.

Up to end of May 2013, the programme has equipped 18,000 ha with the drop-by-drop irrigation system, with an investment of nearly 972 million dirhams.
