Mr Mala recalled that Sonatrach had acquired the company  Western GECO, a subsidiary of Schlumberger, in 2000. it specializes in geophysical services, and 2D seismic data over 10,000 km2 offshore. The group had also acquired further  2 D seismic data on 5,000 km in 2011, the newspaper El Moudjahid reported.

Mala says, processing and interpretation of seismic data revealed a probable existence of hydrocarbon potential. Offshore seismic data acquired last year included two exploration blocks, including one at 3,000 km2, located between Béjaïa and a second between Annaba and Ténès (Chlef) and Mostaganem at 2000 km2.

This seismic data has revealed that the areas likely to contain hydrocarbons are located between 2,000 and 2,500 meters. The cost of one offshore operation is about $ 100 million,Mr Mala said.

Offshore Algerian may be very promising, according to speakers at a meeting of the Algerian Energy  forum  which is focusing on ways to maximize the potential of the Algerian oil and gas offshore The session was moderated by Atle Rettedal, vice president of new projects Statoil, Steve Toothill, Vice President at CGG Veritas, and Kamel Chikhi,  Sonatrach's director associations.
