"This is a credible option that we welcome," said the U.S. official during a round table with a group of Moroccan journalists, noting that the initiative reflects the intense efforts made by Morocco to find a solution to this conflict.

Morocco's commitment to working with the Secretary General of the UN and its staff to achieve a solution to this issue reflects a "positive attitude", she noted.

On the proposal meant to extend the mandate of MINURSO to include human rights, Ms. Sherman noted that the essence of the MINURSO's mandate is to achieve "a peaceful and lasting solution accepted by the parties involved."

The US official also praised the results of the Millennium Challenge Account (worth 697.5 million dollars), signed between Morocco and the United States in 2007, noting that the success of program is such that the two countries are discussing a possible second agreement.

Ms. Sherman said the meetings she had, as part of the Strategic Dialogue with Morocco, are a follow-up of the telephone conversation which took place last May between King Mohammed VI and President Barack Obama.

Ms. Sherman's visit to Morocco is part of her North Africa tour that included Libya, Egypt and Tunisia, and which will take her later to Algeria.
