Schulz calls for Mediterranean parliaments to support projects of UPM

Brussels - The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), Martin Schulz, called Mediterranean parliaments to support projects carried out by the UfM and put them at the heart of their priorities.

Speaking at the ninth plenary session of the PA-UfM held at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels, Schulz stressed the importance of a new impetus to cooperation between the Mediterranean countries and to  make plans carried by the Secretariat of the UfM a priority.

Governments are not doing enough to make the Mediterranean an area of ​​cooperation, lamented Schulz, noting that despite the limited means at its disposal, the PA-UfM must continue to act to promote Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

Parliaments of the UfM are called to do more to projects carried out by the Secretariat of the UfM and should make every effort to find them the necessary funding, he stressed, adding that it also falls to parliamentarians hold governments to fulfill their commitments to the UfM.

Schulz also stressed the importance of continuing to make the PA-UfM an instance of debates and meetings of all stakeholders of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

The ninth session was marked by the intervention of André Azoulay, President of the Anna Lindh Foundation, and Michel Vauzelle, in charge of French president for the Mediterranean, who presented to the Parliamentary Assembly of the UfM conclusions  from meetings in Marseille andhow the PA-UfM can engage to give a concrete content.

At the beginning of this session which saw the participation of 15 Moroccan parliament, the PA-UfM adopted the minutes of the 8th plenary session held on 25 March 2012 in Rabat.

The ninth session of the PA-UfM summit comes after the Presidents of Parliaments of the UPM held in Marseille on 6 and 7 April, which was the first regional meeting at  the highest level since the 2008 Paris meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the UPM.

At the end of this session, the Presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the UfM will be transmitted to the President of the Jordanian House of Representatives, Saed Hayel Srour.

The AP-280 UPM tbrings together parliamentarians from the 43 member countries of the Union.
