Sahara: ambassador denounces embezzlement of humanitarian aid, Algeria's refusal to take census of Tindouf populations
New York (UN) - Morocco's permanent representative to the UN, ambassador Omar Hilale, denounced, on Thursday in New York, the mass and systematic embezzlement by the polisario leaders of humanitarian aids sent for the Tindouf camps populations, condemning Algeria's refusal to take a census of these populations.

Hilale, who was speaking before the UN 4th committee, underlined that these populations were deprived, for decades, of human aids meant for them by international donors, and which had unfortunately served to enrich polisario leaders and others at the expense of populations held captive in the camps.

Quoting the report by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) which revealed systematic, organized and fraudulent embezzlement of humanitarian aid dispatched for the camps, Hilale noted that the Office concluded that such embezzlement was made possible because of the lack of a census of the camps' populations.

Based on OLAF conclusions, the European parliament has adopted late April 2015 a resolution confirming these embezzlements and urging corrective measures to avoid the recurrence of such a thing, Hilale recalled.

He also voiced Morocco's deep concern over the lack of a census of the populations living in the Tindouf camps.
