Sahara: Position of Sweden supporting the efforts of the UN remains unchanged, Speaker of Swedish Parliament

Rabat - Speaker of the National Diet of Sweden (Swedish Parliament), Per Westerberg reiterated here on Wednesday his country's position supporting the efforts of the United Nations concerning the Sahara, and which aims to achieve a just and acceptable solution for both parties.

In a meeting with the Chairwoman of the Morocco-Sweden Parliamentary Friendship Group, Fatima Gouaîma Mazzi, the Swedish official said that his country supports the UN efforts to reach a political solution to the Sahara issue through dialogue, adding that this solution will help develop and achieve prosperity in the countries and peoples of the region.

He recalled that Sweden does not recognize the so-called SADR despite the controversy around this issue at the Swedish parliament, noting that the country's foreign policy is set by the government in compliance with the Constitution.

Westerberg said the position of Sweden concerning SADR is motivated by the fact that this entity "does not meet any of the three conditions necessary for its recognition namely territory, people and effective power."

The head of the Swedish Parliament welcomed the excellent relations of cooperation and friendship between the two Kingdoms in several areas, stressing that his country closely follows the progress made in Morocco on all levels.

For her part, the Chairwoman of the Morocco- Sweden Group welcomed the constant position of the Swedish government regarding the Sahara issue, highlighting the excellent bilateral relations. The visit of Mr. Westerberg to the Kingdom, said Mazzi, an opportunity for strengthening relations between the parliamentary institutions of the two countries and opens new perspectives in the Moroccan-Swedish relations.
