Road accidents in Algeria: 4,447 deaths in 2012, a decrease of 3.28%

Algiers - The road accidents have caused 4,447deaths at the national level in 2012, with 151 fewer deaths over the year 2011, a decrease of 3.28%, the National prevention and road safety (CNSPR), under the Ministry of Transpor said on Monday in Algiers.

The average  was twelve deaths a day in 2012, while in 2011 it was thirteen deaths per day,  the CNPSR's report presented at a conference on the national assessment of road safety, where those  present included the Minister of Transport, Mr. Amar Tou.

In 2012, road accidents saw 710 deaths in urban areas and 3,737 deaths in rural areas, while in 2011 the record was 767 in urban areas and 3,831 in rural areas, the center said.

The wilaya of Batna tops the list with 175 deaths, followed by the wilaya of Setif with 168 deaths, Tébessa (163), M'Sila (154), Bouira and Algiers (145), Djelfa (137), Tlemcen and Oran (132), Mascara (129), Medea (128), Ain Defla (124), Ouargla (122), Boumerdes (120), Biskra (117).

On the number of casualties, the year 2012 saw 69,141, including 20,266 in urban areas and 48,875 in rural areas, while in 2011 the figure was 66,361, including 21,425 in urban areas and 44,936 in rural areas, says CNPSR , which is more than 2,780 injured, an increase of 4.19%.

Regarding the number of accidents reported balance 42,477 in 2012, including 17,170 in urban areas and 25,307 in rural areas, while 2011 recorded 41,467 accidents, 18,467 urban and 23,000 in rural areas.

The Minister of Transport, Mr Amar Tou said, on this occasion, that he "should not" just stop at the balance sheet and the established figures. "What is interesting, he said, is to read all the indicators consistently."

He felt, in this regard, that the decline of 151 deaths "is already encouraging, in spite of the considerable growth of the fleet," recalling 642,000 vehicles were imported in 2012, a number that has multiplied in recent years.

Tou commended the efforts both regulatory and legislative, as well as the work of National Security, the National Gendarmerie and Emergency Preparedness and ro le in road safety.

The Minister called for more efforts, despite the progress made, to fight effectively against road accidents and avoid loss of life, stressing that the work is "collective" and that all stakeholders are called to work together to achieve this goal.
