Road Safety in Morocco

With nearly 67,000 accidents in 2012, Morocco's high death rate continues although the figures are down 1.95% compared to last year. To enhance road safety theMinistry of Equipment and Transport is trying a new formula organized under the theme "4000 killed, we are all responsible."

Abdelaziz Rabbah, Minister of Equipment and Transport launched the 1st edition of the Caravan for the development of road safety in the north, in Tangier, given the mountainous and difficult access to this region. The minister also conducted the inauguration and launch of several projects, including the construction of a third lane for lorries over 400 km along the RN16 and a roundabout at the intersection RN16 and RP4105. He also  presented the decisions of the Interministerial Committee for Road Safety, which met on 14 February 2013, the daily newspaper Les Echos reported.

The Committee decisions relate to  the integration of road safety education in the school curriculum at all levels, supporting the Ministry of Health by upgrade emergency services, the equipment in ambulances and road building control to ensure compliance with the rules of the road, among others. In addition, a "National Charter for driving on the right" is also signed by different departments.

A new highway code was introduced in early 2011 which raised fines and penalties for speeding along with other
measures.
