Interior ministry spokesman Khaled Tarrouche said police were pelted with rocks and firebombs in Guellala.Several police cars were also set alight before the crowd was dispersed with tear gas.

Residents had been promised that the unofficial dump would remain closed, local media said.Mr Tarrouche said trouble flared when authorities in Guellala decided to reopen the dump until 2013.A group of 40 residents blocked the entrance to the dump and were dispersed by tear gas. A crowd then gathered in the centre of the town and attacked a police post with rocks and petrol bombs.police reinforcements were sent from Tunis and order was restored by early evening.

Rubbish collection and poor public services such as water and electricity  and unemployment have become major causes of popular discontent  in Tunisia. On Friday in Sidi Bouzid, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who tried to break into the regional government headquarters. The scale of the demonstration in Guellala and the use of petrol bombs against the police recall the rising in Sidi Bouzid which led to the fall of former president Ben Ali. The underlying social grievances in deprived areas remain unresolved.
