Ravi Shankar, Indian sitar master has died

The Indian sitar master, Ravi Shankar, who has influenced many Western artists including The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, has died at the age of 92, it was learned Wednesday from an official source.

Ravi Shankar, father of jazz singer Norah Jones, died in a hospital in San Diego, United States, where he had gone to have surgery, the Indian television channel CNN-IBN reported.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed his sadness and discussed the loss of "a national treasure and a global ambassador for the cultural heritage of India."

Ravi Shankar, who lived in California, was born in the holy city of Varanasi on the Ganges, April 7, 1920. He came from a family of Brahmins, the highest caste in Hindu society.

George Harrison, the Beatles became his student in 1960 and then collaborated both on several projects, including at a concert for Bangladesh in 1971. George Harrison  nicknamed Ravi Shankar  "the Godfather of World Music".
