Radio Tanger celebrates the centenary of Cervantes Theatre

Tangier: On the occasion of World Theatre Day (March 27), Radio Tangier spent Wednesday, a special edition of the show "Dairat Daw'e" to celebrate the centenary of Cervantes Theatre Tangier.

The show, presented by Abdellatif Benyahya was an opportunity to shed light on the situation of this cultural monument that is in a state of neglect for several decades, despite its historical and cultural importance to the city of Detroit.
 
The guests of the show, including artists, historians and intellectuals of Tangier and elsewhere, recalled the history of this mecca of international culture of the time the city was founded in 1913 by the rich Spanish owners Manuel Pena and his wife, Esperanza Orellana and was in its golden age, the most famous and most prestigious theater in North Africa.
 
Participants also noted the dilapidated state of the building which is owned by the Spanish State, and called for the renovation and restoration of this monument witnessed the openness and friendliness of this city meeting point of different cultures and civilizations.
 
Speaking at the show, the mayor of Tangier, Fouad El Omari said that actions are carried out in collaboration with the Consulate General of Spain to Tangier and the Spanish Embassy in Morocco to revive this cultural space, adding that the urban community has begun on  a technical document for this monument, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Monuments Inspectorate and local authorities.
 
The Spanish side is in favor of rehabilitation of this high place of the common memory of the two neighbouring countries and discussions are ongoing to find the proper way to revive the theatre, he said, noting that the two sides are also considering the mode of  management of this cultural institution once renovated.
