Rabat, Berlin hail 'exceptional' bilateral relations

Rabat - Morocco and Germany welcomed the outstanding bilateral relations on the occasion of the entry into force on Thursday of the "Rabat Declaration" on Moroccan-German relations.

In this Declaration, Foreign Minister, Saad Dine El Otmani and his German counterpart Guido Westerwelleles, stressed "the exceptional and deep relations between Morocco and Germany," expressing satisfaction with the strong cooperation between the two countries based on common interests and values, both bilaterally and on regional and global issues.

The Ministers also hailed the excellent cooperation in the field of higher education, and said the two countries are set to explore ways and means to strengthen this cooperation, mainly between the diplomatic academies of the foreign ministries of the two countries.

On the regional and international fronts, the two officials agreed that the process of Moroccan reforms should continue to benefit from the support of all the relevant bodies of the European Union in order to achieve the objectives set by the EU-Morocco partnership.

El Otmani and Westerwelleles also hailed the success of the dialogue on migration, mobility and security between the EU and Morocco, noting that the Mobility Partnership Joint Declaration is a "significant achievement" for EU-Moroccan cooperation in the field of migration and sends a strong message to the region.

The German official hailed the political, economic, social and institutional reforms as well as the other initiatives undertaken by HM King Mohammed VI, stressing the important role that Morocco continues to play in promoting stability, security and development in the region of North Africa.

Regarding the issue of the Sahara, Mr. Westerwelleles reiterated his country's support to the ongoing negotiations, led by the United Nations to achieve a political, peaceful, and lasting solution to the Sahara conflict, noting that the Security Council described as serious and credible the efforts of Morocco to solve the issue.

Germany commended the important role played by Morocco in the Security Council, as well as in regional institutions, mainly in Mali, to face the challenge of instability and insecurity in the Sahel region and beyond.
