Presidential Candidate ends campaign and endorses Amr Moussa.
Egypt goes to the polls to elect a president on 23 and 24 May with a run of if there is no out right winner on 16 and 17 June.

The main contenders other than Amr Moussa, are Ahmed Shafik a former airforce general and the last Prime Minister under Mubarak, the head of the Muslim Brotherhood,Mohammed Mursi and Abdel Moneim Abou El Fotouh who is backed by the Salafist parties and some secular elements.

The long suffering and patient Egyptian electorate have been exhorted to vote on 23 and 24 May and has promised free and fair elections."Egypt will offer an example to the world of free and fair presidential elections that (reflect) the will of the people," Tantawi said, AFP reports.

Parliament Speaker Saad El-Katatni adjourned Wednesday's session of the People's Assembly (the lower house of Egypt's parliament) by announcing that all assembly activities would be temporarily suspended until 26 May, two days after Egypt's first post-Mubarak presidential polls, Ahram online   reports.

Once a president is elected the constitution has to be drafted which will define his powers and there is likely to be some disagreement between those who want a strong presidency and those who want more powers for the parliament.

The need to resolve Egypt's pressing financial problems and to restore its trading performance and investor confidence will be a key concern.Amr Moussa may be seen internationally as a safe pair of hands for the Egyptian economy but this may not be enough to ensure his election .However he is seen as a counterbalance to the predominately islamist parliament led by the FJP and al-Nour parties.

Whilst Tunisia and Morocco have majority moderate islamist led governments they are members of a coalition which the Egyptian parliament is not. The Muslim Brotherhood which has the parliamentary majority has so far been refused the right to form a new cabinet by the Supreme Armed Forces council (SCAF) which continues to support the Ganzouri cabinet which it appointed.
