The invitation comes after a Moroccan delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in a ceremony celebrating the first anniversary of the Tunisian Revolution on January 14th in Tunis.

Marzouki’s visit is part of a regional tour by the Tunisian President to revitalize the Union of the Arab Maghreb and bring the union’s countries closer to each other, following changes in the region with the Arab revolutions.

The Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) was created in February 1989 and is made up of five countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci has indicated in early January 2012 that a meeting of AMU ministers of foreign affairs is planned to take place in Morocco in late Febraury 2012.

The AMU has been suspended since 1994 due to disagreements between its members.
