In fact, the incident began when the Tunisian president spoke. Much of the 5,000 people gathered in the square chanted "Get out", one of the rallying cries of the uprising that led to the ouster of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, reports Le Parisien.

President Marzouki tried to calm  the situation promising economic progress within six months for the people of Sidi Bouzid. "I understand the legitimate anger, but the government has diagnosed the disease. In six months, a stable government will be in place and will deliver the medicines to cure the ills, "he said.

It was then that the stone throwing started, when Mustapha Ben Jaafar was about to speak. This could have been caused by the "I understand" that would be the cause .. an expression reminiscent of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali just before his fall whenhe said "I understand you."

Afterwards, the protesters chanted: "The people want the fall of the government," and also invaded the square on which was mounted the rostrum where the Head of State had spken. The police did not intervene since clashes between demonstrators and police are increasing in the country, Le Parisien observed.
