Portuguese government welcomes holding of 5th seminar on Saharawi culture in the Azores

Lisbon - The Portuguese government welcomed on Friday the holding in the Azores of the 5th Seminar on the Saharawi culture under the auspices of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as part of "the Confidence-Building Measures" (CBM) program, while reiterating the support of Portugal to the UN efforts to reach a political solution to the Sahara conflict.

Some 140 people from the southern provinces and the Tindouf camps began a cultural seminar in the Azores islands (March 16-21) to reflect and discuss a number of cultural issues, said the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

Portugal supports the UN efforts to reach a political and mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara conflict, the statement added. The four previous apolitical seminars were held in Portugal. The first took place in September 2011 in Madeira (Portugal) under the general theme of the Hassani culture, while the second took place from 3 to 6 July 2012 in the Azores and discussed the ''role of women in the Sahrawi culture.

'' The third thematic workshop was held in February 2013 in Faro (south of Portugal) with the theme ''the importance of the tent in the Saharawi culture'', while the fourth was held from October 28 to November 3 in the Azores on the theme ''the importance of the camel in the Saharawi culture.''
