Official Urges AI To Refrain from Hasty Reports Ignoring Morocco's Achievements

Vendredi 3 Juillet 2020

Rabat - Minister of State in charge of Human Rights and Relations with Parliament Mustapha Ramid urged, on Thursday in Rabat, Amnesty International (AI) to review its line of conduct with Morocco and to avoid issuing hasty judgments, declarations and reports which ignore national achievements in the field of human rights, in the light of the organization's report of June 22, 2020, which included serious and tendentious accusations against the Kingdom.

"I hope Amnesty will provide the evidence, and in this case it will be necessary for Morocco to react in an appropriate manner. In the absence of evidence, people of good faith within the organization must conclude that this attitude constitutes a transgression against Morocco, and initiate a kind of review which will lead to a fair approach towards Morocco, and, consequently, to refrain from issuing hasty judgments, data and reports which ignore what has been achieved", stressed Ramid during a press briefing held by Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, government spokesperson, Saaid Amzazi, at the end of the Government Council meeting.

The Moroccan government, he went on during this press briefing in which he took part along with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad Nasser Bourita, underlined that the allegations made by this organization, in particular in its latest report, are completely unfounded, adding that "the Kingdom of Morocco does not stop at refuting these allegations. It challenges those who made them to provide evidence". He indicated that the Head of Government wrote a letter to the secretary general of Amnesty International, and renewed once again the request for arguments", noting that it is no longer a question in the present case of the evaluation of a specific situation and abstract data which may give rise to differences of opinion, but we are faced with a fact which can be confirmed or refuted by evidence.

"Morocco's current approach is an important step forward in interacting with international human rights institutions to put things back on track," he said, stressing at the same time the need for all national and international organizations to be partners of Morocco in backing the advances it is making, but without resorting to fortuitous allegations. Pointing out that this is not the first blunder of Amnesty International with regard to Morocco, he recalled that in 2014, the organization was mistaken when "it classified us with 5 other countries within the framework of an international campaign on the issue of torture", adding that its secretary general had himself admitted that there is no systematic torture in Morocco.
