North Africa: the challenge of youth employment

Mercredi 18 Juillet 2012

A joint statement by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), released on Monday in Tunis, notes that the unemployment rate for youth (15-24) is high during the past decade, up to 23% on average in North Africa.
North Africa: the challenge of youth employment
In Morocco, this rate is 17.9% according to the Ministry of Employment that states, however, that 80% of the unemployed are young.

On the sidelines of the Regional Conference on Promoting Youth Employment in North Africa, held on Monday in Tunis, the OECD and the AfDB showed that the average unemployment rate among youth aged 15-24  during the last decade is 23% in the region.

The OECD and the AfDB to explain the growth of the last ten years in North Africa "has not allowed the region to create enough jobs for the young".

The OECD and the AfDB suggests the adoption of inclusive growth strategies "creating more skilled jobs" advocating the development of the private sector, the main provider of jobs of tomorrow, through small and medium-sized enterprises. Because according to the two organizations, the public sector is saturated in the region.

"North Africa needs to develop economic structures providing more job opportunities for young people. This requires measures to encourage the diversification of existing sectors, and creating more value on national soil, to support the creation of quality jobs on a large scale, "said Center Director of Development OECD, Mario Pezzini.

Young people still have a tendency to prefer jobs in the public sector because of status and perceived stability. This attitude has to change because the public sector is saturated and cannot absorb more unemployed young people.
