NGOs call for protection of the rights of Moroccans living in the Netherlands

Rabat: The Coordination of Associations of Moroccans living in the Netherlands called on Wednesday in Rabatfor the Moroccan government to redouble its efforts to protect the rights and benefits of the Moroccan community affected by the decision of the Dutch authorities to reduce retirement pensions by 40 per cent.

The government must address this issue rigorously and take action against the Dutch authorities and European institutions to enforce agreements on this subject and put an end to human rights violations and acquired Moroccans established in the Netherlands, said the coordinator of Moroccan organizations in the Netherlands against the reduction of retirement pensions and respect for conventions, Abdou Mnebhi, during a press briefing at the headquarters of the Moroccan Organisation of Human Rights (OMDH).

This decision reflects discrimination based on origin, he said, noting that despite its weight and contribution in various fields, the Moroccan community, which has 400,000 people, 80 pc have dual nationality, is the target of the speech politics of the extreme right that resonates with a part of the public and certain institutions and may infringe the rights acquired and Moroccans living in Europe in general.

For his part, the President of the OMDH Nechnache Mohamed has highlighted the role of MREs in political life in the Netherlands, saying discrimination based on origins began recently to crack  down at the expense of the interests this community, even though they are  guaranteed by bilateral  and international agreements.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Saad El Dine Otmani recently announced that the Moroccan government has taken a series of measures in response to the decision of the Dutch authorities to reduce or cancel the pensions of retired Moroccan established in their motherland.

He pointed out that the government had coordinated with other countries whose citizens are victims of the same measure, in particular Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey, to define the legal and diplomatic contours, adding that his department had made contact with the International Labour Organisation to coordinate positions and seek legal advice to this effect.
