Essaouira - The "Moulay Abderrahmane" dam, inaugurated on Thursday by HM King Mohammed VI, is a major infrastructure that will supply the province of Essaouira with drinking water, said Director General of the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) Abderrahim Hafidi. In a statement to the press, Hafidi said that in addition to this dam, ONEE has launched two major projects, the first of which is to strengthen the production of drinking water through a treatment plant for the dam surface water with a production capacity of 250 liters/second, which is an addition to a capacity of 240 liters/second which is already operational from the ground water at the provincial level.

Worth 135 million MAD, this project takes into account the geographic assets of the region and benefits from the positioning of the dam which is at a height of 245 m, while the last distribution reservoir is at a height of 40 m, he explained. These assets made it possible to be able to transport water to supply the city of Essaouira and the urban regions, said Hafidi, adding that this project takes into consideration energy saving for the m3 production. The second project, which concerns access to drinking water in rural areas, consists of connecting 16 communes, he said, adding that 4 communes with a population of 33,000 inhabitants have already been connected under this project. He also said that works will be completed before the summer for the other twelve communes, which will benefit 65,000 inhabitants.

HM King Mohammed VI inaugurated Thursday the "Moulay Abderrahmane" dam, built on oued Ksoub for a total cost of 920 million dirhams. The sovereign also inaugurated the hydro-agricultural development project of the "Ksoub" perimeter downstream of the new dam, which mobilizes investments of about 238 million dirhams, and drinking water projects relating to the construction of a water treatment plant of the Moulay Abderrahmane dam and the laying of water supply pipes (135 million dirhams), and a project to strengthen access to drinking water in rural areas (192 million dirhams).
