Following the renewal by the UN Security Council of the MINURSO mandate, the just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution urged by the UN relies now more than ever on the Moroccan autonomy initiative, said Finaud, former diplomat and Senior Advisor to the Program of emerging security challenges in the GCSP.

Finaud was speaking within the framework of an international seminar on "Regional Committees under National Councils for Human Rights: best practices and challenges", organized by Morocco's permanent Mission to the United Nations. Like previous seminars by the Kingdom in Geneva, this seminar aims to highlight the importance of the Moroccan initiative for negotiating a status of autonomy for the Sahara region, in the light of efforts made by Morocco in terms of economic, socio-cultural, environmental and human development in the region.

Regarding key aspects of the Moroccan autonomy initiative in its Human Rights dimension, Finaud said that the Moroccan plan proposes a framework for negotiations on all aspects of the autonomy: institutional, political, economic, social, environmental and cultural, with a focus on human rights.
