New York - Morocco proposed on Tuesday at a side-event of the UN 68th general assembly the creation of an "African alliance for migration and development" to ponder on an "African common vision" over migration based on the international law of human rights.

The proposal came during a side-event held by Morocco on the eve of a high-level debate on "international migration and development" slated for October 3-4.

Last month, HM King Mohammed VI endorsed recommendations from Morocco's National Human Rights Council (CNDH) on protections for migrants and asylum seekers, saying the often controversial issue "should be addressed in a comprehensive and humanist manner," according to international law and multilateral cooperation.

The government was instructed to completely overhaul migration policy, and opened last week an office in Rabat for refugees and stateless persons which will be endeavoring with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to examine asylum requests.

Participants in the meeting welcomed the Moroccan initiative to hold this side-event as a concrete contribution on the part of Morocco to the 2nd high-level dialog on international migrations and development.

They also stressed the importance of partnership for the best management of migration flows, reinforcing capacities and adopting best practices.
