Initiated by the African Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS), the U.S. Embassy in Dakar, the Senegalese government, this five-day seminar will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss different strategic approaches to fight transnational threats in the region. This meeting, which is also supported by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM ) and the Center for Strategic Studies of the Middle East and the South Asia, also seeks to examine the nature, scope and implications of transnational threats, and to identify and assess the strengths and weaknesses of national, regional and international initiatives on the matter. Speaking at the opening session of the workshop, to resume behind closed doors, Senegalese Interior Minister Abdoulaye Daouda Diallo, said the challenges in the Sahel region pose a real danger and a threat to international peace and security. "The Sahel is still witnessing multifaceted crises which makes it a breeding ground for criminal networks of all kinds, often maintained by terrorist organizations," he recalled, noting that such a situation makes the countries of the region increasingly vulnerable to insecurity, resulting from various transnational illicit trafficking, mainly of people, drugs and weapons.
