Morocco hosts consultations meeting on Sahel

Casablanca - Minister delegate for foreign affairs Mbaraka Bouaida co-chaired with UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel Robert Piper, on Tuesday in Casablanca, a meeting of UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinators in Sahel countries.

This meeting, attended by representatives of 9 countries in the Sahel (Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon), touched on the identification and sharing of good practices and expertize fields to reinforce resilience in the Sahel.

In a speech on this occasion, Bouaida underlined that holding this meeting in Morocco shows UN recognition for the Kingdom's pioneer role as an indispensable actor to achieve peace and stability in the region. 

She also voiced Morocco's concern over the humanitarian situation in the Sahel due to climate, food and security challenges.

She recalled Morocco's efforts, during its UNSC mandate in 2012, for the adoption of resolution 2085 and its action in favor of the region as a member state of the UN strategy for the Sahel. 

Piper gave a presentation on the humanitarian situation in the Sahel and international actions. He underlined in this regard that Morocco is an active and precious actor and hailed the Kingdom's efforts within international forums, its humanitarian action and readiness to share its expertize in the field of sustainable development in favor of the Sahel.

Discussions also focused on other themes as "insecurity, conflicts and protracted displacements", "nutrition and food insecurity", "epidemics" and "natural disasters".
