Morocco Well Located to Become Power Hub in Mediterranean

Brussels - Morocco is well located to become a real power hub between Europe and Africa, President of Medgrid consortium, André Merlin, said Tuesday.

"When we look at the geography of the Mediterranean, Morocco is the right location to develop electrical interconnections between Europe and Africa," said the president of Medgrid, a consortium created in 2011 to promote and facilitate the development of an interconnection network between Europe and the countries of southern and eastern Mediterranean.

Mr. Merlin, who was speaking at a press conference following the second Euro-Mediterranean Energy meeting, said the two existing interconnections and the other two planned between Morocco, Spain and Portugal enable Morocco to become a real power hub between Europe and Africa.

The interconnection between Morocco and Spain could be achieved in a very short period of time and would require 300 million euros, while the other interconnection with Portugal would require 600 million euros, he said, noting that this investment pays off as of its fifth year.
