Morocco To Set Up Support System for Seasonal Female Workers in Spain

Mercredi 6 Juin 2018

Rabat - Employment Minister Mohamed Yatim announced, on Monday in Rabat, that all efforts will be made to set up a support system for Moroccan seasonal female workers in Spanish farms in order to supervise their situation, facilitate their integration into the socio-professional environment, guarantee their protection and provide support when necessary.

Answering a question on "Moroccan female workers who suffer sexual abuse in strawberry farms in Spain", Yatim said that under the investigation on the abuse of Moroccan female workers, "we will continue our coordination with Spain while using any means necessary to put an end to such practices if proven."

Pending the results of the ongoing investigation by the Spanish authorities, the ministry and other government departments will take the necessary measures, he stated, urging the victims to file complaints directly with the consular services or the ministry.

He also stressed the need to develop this operation and ensure its success, especially with the growing Spanish demand for Moroccan labour.

Yatim recalled that his department received late 2017 a collective job offer from the Spanish embassy in Rabat for the 2018 agricultural season, involving 11,000 seasonal female workers for the associations of agricultural enterprises in the province of "Huelva" (red berries and strawberries), as well as an additional 7,000 female workers.
