Morocco-Portugal: Joint Intention to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation to Include New Vital Areas

Rabat - Morocco and Portugal expressed, on Wednesday in Rabat, at a meeting between head of government, Saâd Dine El Otmani and Portuguese minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, their common will to intensify their bilateral cooperation and further expand it to encompass new vital areas.

The two officials praised, in this regard, the level of friendship ties and good neighborliness between the two countries, while highlighting the positive dynamic that characterizes the bilateral cooperation relations in various fields, as well as the level of political consultation between Rabat and Lisbon, says a statement by the head of government's Department.

They also expressed their ambition to intensify bilateral cooperation to include new vital areas, noting that the next Morocco-Portugal high-level meeting will be an opportunity to focus on areas of great importance, such as energy, given the common strategic challenges for both countries in this sector and their contribution to the development of renewable energy sources and the strengthening of their share in national production, according to the same source.

El Otmani and his guest also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of immigration and to develop new mechanisms to regulate and encourage organized migration, in parallel with their cooperation in the fight against the phenomenon of illegal immigration.

They also stressed the need to intensify and consolidate the links between the economic players in the two countries and to give new impetus to the Portugal-Morocco business Forum, in order to better optimize the opportunities offered by their promising partnership, the statement added.

At the international level, the Portuguese official commended the Kingdom's initiatives aimed at contributing to stability, security and peace regionally and internationally, noting the importance of Morocco as Portugal's partner in the region and as a key player in Africa, which is one of the priorities of Portuguese foreign policy and of the European Union in general.

Augusto Santos Silva is on a working visit to Morocco as part of the strengthening of friendly and cooperation relations between the two countries and the preparations for the next Morocco-Portugal high-level meeting, to be held in the coming months.
