Morocco, Key Partner for USA in Counterterrorism, US Deputy Secretary of State
Rabat - Morocco is a key partner for the United States in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, said, Friday in Rabat, United States Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, who is on a visit to the Kingdom as part of a regional tour (June 25-29).
"Morocco, which is one of our oldest allies in the world as shows our peace and friendship treaty signed in 1786, is a key partner for the United States as part of efforts to fight terrorism", Sullivan said at a press briefing after a meeting with foreign minister Nasser Bourita.
Morocco, a major Non-NATO ally of the United States, contributes to address the different issues and problems facing the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and plays an active role as part of international efforts in the fight against the terrorist threat, notably in the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), noted the US official, welcoming the leadership of the Kingdom in the security field. Sullivan added that his talks with Bourita touched on military cooperation, particularly the recent exercise "African Lion".
The United States is committed to deepening its "solid" relations with Morocco to serve the prosperity of both countries, as well as security and peace in the region, he said. "The United States engages in close consultations with Morocco on topics of shared interest, as regional security, energy diversification, sustainable development and the promotion of education and culture," he said. For his part, Bourita said that these talks were an opportunity to discuss the development of the strong relations uniting Morocco and the United States, recalling that during this year, a new impetus was given to military cooperation through the "African Lion" exercise that the US forces conducted in Morocco, in collaboration with the Royal Armed Forces (FAR).
On security, he said that Rabat and Washington are proposing initiatives and projects for regional security and stability, adding that several meetings have been held this year, particularly on the fight against terrorism and organized crime. Bourita also underlined the continuation of the strategic dialogue between the two countries through the holding of several meetings in Rabat and Washington throughout the year. He also noted that his talks with Sullivan provided an opportunity to share viewpoints on issues relating to the Middle East, Syria and North Africa.
